Trip to Greece – August’10
From 2 to 12 August 2010, my daugther Marie, Serge and his wife Yoli took (again) a trip to Astypalaia, Greece (LGPL).
We flew from Grimbergen (EBGB) to Bastia, Corsica (LFKB). Then to Corfu, Greece (LGKR) to reach Astypalaia, Greece (LGPL) two days later.
On our way back, since we were flying to Dubrovnik, Croatia (LDDU), which is outside the Schengen Countries, we needed to make a stop first at Kos Island, Greece (LGKO) for customs clearance and refueling. On our flight we passed Thessaloniki, Greece (LGTS), flew through Macedonia, Albania and along Podgorica, Montenegro (LYPG) following airways on a strict airway-based route.
Again for customs and refueling reasons, we flew from Dubrovnik (LDDU) directly to Cannes, France (LFMD), crossing Italy from Pescara (LIBP) to Grosetto, South of Elba and via Cap Corse to Cannes, via allocated VFR intersections.
Finally from Cannes we flew back to Grimbergen.
The lovely pictures, taken by Serge, can be seen here.

Piper Saratoga II HP Pilot Operating Handbook (POH)
This Item Contains a Full Copy of the Piper Saratoga II HP Pilot Operating Handbook, Including :
- KLN 90B Operating Summary
- a Full Equipment List
N123AX Handling Notes
Care should be taken in using this document, since it was originally copied from a Saratoga SP (which for example seems equipped with an emergency gear system which is DIFFERENT from the one on a Saratoga II HP)
Leaning Procedure
It is highly recommended to read the ’Lycoming Flyer Key Reprints‘ Manual.
Especially the section on ’Proper Leaning at Cruise Aids Safe Flight and Saves Dollars’, found at page 39 of the ‘Operations‘ Chapter.
N123AX is to be flown at Peak EGT, even at low altitudes (and already reducing short after takeoff). In this way, no confusion exists if you are flying at the rich vs the lean side, but especially consumption will be minimal.
My experience during the last trip around Southern Europe dictates fuel consumption, if properly leaned, varies between 13,5 and 15 Gallons/Hour, nearly independent of the altitude (let’s say between 3.000 and 10.000 ft)
Please also refer to ’The “New” Old Leaning Technique‘ for further reference.
Also, when preparing for descend and landing, avoid sudden cooling of the engine (cf. page 53 of the ‘Operations‘ Chapter)
Further, there’s an article on EGT and combustion analysis to read as well.
